The U.S. Army issued a specification for a chipless cutting module to help decommission a stockpile of single multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) rockets. Three segmentation cuts were required on a single multiple launch rocket system without producing any metal chip debris. The rockets were constructed of aluminum materials having an approximate wall thickness of .130" (3.3mm). The machine was required to perform over 50,000 cutting cycles without requiring service intervention or maintenance.
Wachs Solution:
Two solid bearing rotating platforms were custom designed and built for seamless integration into the U.S. Army's de-mating module. The platforms housed a total of three self feeding and end cycle retracting chipless wheel carriers. The MLRS segmentation process required automation to enable remote operation behind a protective barrier.
