RSWF Waste Liner Cutter

RSWF Waste Liner Cutter

A US Department of Energy processing facility required a specialized machine to perform destructive cutting of multiple, carbon steel, RSWF radioactive scrap waste liners. Each liner is a triple contained wall 24" x .687" / 16" x .500" / 12.750" x 0.250" (610 x 17.45mm / 406.4 x 12.7mm / 323.9 x 6.4mm) with no internal supports except for pea gravel lining in between each OD liner. The goal was extracting a final container that housed non-spent fuel and nuclear waste for decommissioning. All work had to be completed in a contained, hot cell environment utilizing reciprocating robotic arms to control the cutting process.

Wachs Solution:
Design and build a modified hydraulic powered Diamond Wire Saw for the project, controlled remotely using a Wachs Topside Control Unit housed outside of the hot cell. The saw is equipped with an adjustable power clamping system, ensuring uniform and secure clamping to the workpiece, plus wire cooling performed via an integrated CO2 cooling system.
