A large defense contractor required a custom engineered system for cold cutting a large rectangular window section through the outer shell and mating skeleton of a damaged U.S. Navy submarine. This section was designed to facilitate the construction of a new top sail section on an existing 688 class submarine.
Wachs Solution:
Wachs was commissioned to build a custom designed, precision reciprocating saw for the hull sectioning. Comprised of straight and radius rail mounting arrangements, it housed a universal hydraulic reciprocating saw module with up to 8” (20.3cm) of stroke. A 20' x 28' (6.1 x 8.5m) rectangular section from a 32' (9.8m) diameter, horizontally orientated cylindrical vessel was successfully removed.
